Improving skills with a BB Gun
<<<< Back to Articles Index
The BB gets it's name for the BB shell. The BB shell measured between B and BBB; hence it got christened as BB. Originally, it was made from a lead shell. However, now the BB rounds are made up of non-toxic steel, plastic or copper measuring in the range of .177 caliber. Some of the BB guns also use pellets that are pieces designed from lead. These come in variety of shapes and in order to ensure stability in shooting these have a flared back end. BB guns are not toys even though many of them resemble toy guns. They should be used only after proper training and under parental supervision. The BB guns can be categorized as guns with reservoirs, breechloaders and muzzleloaders. The kids learn shooting on the BB guns. For centuries these guns have served as the first step towards learning shooting and the art of marksmanship. The BB guns score hands down with the young girls and boys. This is where they learn the basic ropes of shooting. But the passage of time has seen the usage of these guns increase. From being a poor cousin of the air guns, where the BB guns were just used by the kids for learning, they have now seen a surge in popularity. The BB gun and pellet gun programs are held at the national championship as well as certain recreational programs. The sheer number of participants that this game attracts each year reflects clearly on the popularity of these programs.
You need to remember certain points to keep you steady when shooting a BB gun. Although the BB guns are not likely to go off by accident, it is advisable to keep the gun unloaded until ready to use. It is important for both the shooters as well as spectators to wear protective eye-gear. The gun should be pointed in a safe direction or it should face toward the ground. Also the shooters should keep a track of what the target is and what lies beyond that. Make sure that you unload your BB gun each time you get over with shooting as its worth the effort rather than putting either your safety or anyone else's safety at stake.
Once you have mastered the art of handling the BB gun you can graduate to the air guns, which is quite popular with the adults both while shooting as well as for recreational programs.
