BB Guns a Safety Guide
<<<< Back to Articles Index
The basic idea behind almost any firearm, from a pistol to a cannon, is to create a small explosion just behind a projectile positioned in a cylinder. When the explosion tries to expand in a gun, it can go only in one direction. If a projectile is in the way, the expanding matter from the explosion will push the projectile forward as it makes its way down the barrel. BB guns work on the same principle as is used in air guns. They use compressed air to force bb guns and sometimes other types of pellets from the barrels of the guns. Most bb guns have to be cocked each time in order to make a shot. This is enough to ensure that bb guns aren't likely to go off by accident and are quite safe in that regard. Still, it is advisable to never leave any gun, bb gun or otherwise, where young children can easily get them. Simply because you cannot rule out the possibility for bb guns to be life threatening. It is, in fact, reported that bb guns are responsible for about four deaths a year. This number of deaths per year for bb guns may not be very high, especially in comparison with deaths caused by other types of guns, but even this number is not justifiable because deaths due to bb guns are completely avoidable. So if you choose to purchase and keep a bb gun around, be sure to follow the guidelines for gun safety that you would for any type of gun. Each year there are some four deaths that are attributed to the BB guns. Considering the number of deaths caused due to other guns this number isn't huge, however it can be done away with. These guns can prove to be so harmful, hence it is important to follow the set of guidelines issued for gun safety. The number of deaths occurring due to BB guns is avoidable, but you just need to keep a few things in mind. There is a set of cardinals you must follow while using a BB gun- always use a lock on the trigger (including the pump version). Put the BB gun back in the gun case after the usage. Keep it out of reach of your little ones who would be more than happy to lay their hands on this. Never leave the BB gun loaded. Unloading the BB's out of the BB guns might seem a tad too troublesome each time, but it is worth the effort than to risk your life or life of those around you by accidentally triggering it. One last bit of suggestion: whenever using the BB gun, it should always be pointed towards the ground unless you are ready to shoot the target. The reckless pointing of the gun without aiming has led to many an accidents. Hence, be careful to use the BB guns lest you hurt someone.
